What would do good?

Beast, I completely agree...you can't say that Wise is the same as Johnson City/ETSU. But businesses in those places also have a lot more competition from other similar businesses. My feeling is that there's nowhere close enough that kids from UVa-Wise can walk to between classes to eat that's not on campus. There's nowhere that they can really walk to for a pub-like environment after class or on the weekend either. From what I understand, there aren't a lot of options for them on campus and I could see a business like that doing well...plus it's somewhere for the other 50000 people that live in Wise County to go.

All I have to say is Poor Farm, it was within walking distance of the college and was started with the intentions of being just what y'all are talking about and being open for lunch and such and how long did it last? It wasn't because they were overpriced or didn't have good food, but because people just wouldn't go there. You can not look at the population of Wise county as a reliable customer base unless it is near WalMart.

Poor Farm within walking distance, come on if it's past Bee line that is too far, especially if your talking about kids going to a bar. Ahh i remember ol Papa Joe's $3 pitchers on Thursday nites on campus.

I thought Poor Farm was a tad pricey on some things plus they gave way tooo much food per serving (not a normal complaint) but it can cut into profit big time. Also, the bar area was poorly placed, had enough room to sit about 2 people, 1 TV, kids running around, not really your typical bar atmosphere.

I also believe rent played a factor and the fact that they didn't have ovens and such did they? Poor Farm was really more of a to go place IMO.

Wise has made it known for years, it doesn't want to be considered a college town. I'm sorry, but rent is way too expensive in Wise County for businesses, especially in the Wal-Mart region.
There was even a coffee shop/live music venue when Poor Farm shut down, and it couldn't even last.
It has almost got to be a national chain, with them backing and funding.

yeah, cause there are more than that one place. pubs and clubs are a lil more accepted in those places. 10 beers is not a lot of choice either. The point is cheaper food, less 10-15 dollar meals, 5-10 bucks a go. Drinks and Pizza work best, sub sands and what not.
Id venture to say that well established places such as downtown across from campus do well, like its mentioned rent is a huge issue. You cant start out paying more in rent than you know youre gonna make. Pizza is the easiest, sell by the pie or slice. Cater to a younger audience, I love the tavern but I hate paying 3.50 for a budlight.

But thats why its the stoneage there and you have to have a beer next a family having a dinner. Lexington is my fav place to go, you can bounce in and out of places, grab a drink, some food and be done with it. I used JC as example due to size, hell how many UVA WISE students do you see out often? Not Many, But unless you wanna have another burger place that sells 2.75 sweet tea and cokes and Turkey Clubs for 7.99 people are gonna have to deal with it.

Point taken, but the majority of those students arent on campus and often they arent students at all. Go to any of the restaurant bars in wise co and see how they get full, its uncomfortable, you have people trying to have dinner and some people just wanting to have a beer, watch a game etc. The bars are located in the MIDDLE of the dinning areas, the old mosbys was the best and its a shame that closed.
But you would have zero competition in Wise Co, I mean what Brownies and The Golden Pines? I am just saying, if someone wants it, its there for the taking. Its gonna have to be someone who isnt relying on the business as their sole income. Cause its going to fail, its going to be a secondary luxury idea, not someone trying to survive based on their profit.

Id make it LPD themed, Id make it UVA Wise themed, embrace the local.
